Nishijin is a district in Kyoto renowned for its textiles and traditional weaving. Many of Japan's most iconic kimono and traditional clothing are still produced here. This is also where we source our silk kaku obi for iaido practice.
The kaku obi is a traditional thin belt, originally worn predominantly by men, in the Edo Jidai it found use as a practical obi for stowing your swords and as such found use in traditional martial arts. Nowadays it is common practice to use a traditional kaku obi in iaido and also other modern martial arts like kendo.
Our silk kaku obi are made right here in Kyoto near our headquarters in Nishijin. Approximately 390cm by 9.5cm.
